Alienware unveils its new breed of budget laptops

Notorious for high-end notebooks with astronomical price tags, Alienware enters a new territory of affordability.

A couple of new specimens have joined Alienware's Area-51 laptop collection, each with a mothership's worth of features on-board.

Despite prices starting at just $1,049 (£600) for the 15.4-inch widescreen Area 51-R m5500, this still promises to cut it as a high-end performer. Most notably it's Intel Centrino-equipped and comes loaded with a solid NVidia GeForce Go 6600 card. But in true Alienware tradition it's a bit of a bloater, weighing in at 6lb.

Its big brother, the Area-51 m5700 ($1,499/£850), is an even bolder prospect for the price. As well as packing an NVidia GeForceT Go 6800 graphics card, the 17-incher is kitted out with Windows XP Media Center Edition and dual SATA hard drives.
