Sony plans PS3 game deluge

Hundreds of software titles to hit the PlayStation 3 in the next year.

Big plans are afoot to invigorate the PlayStation 3's slightly lacklustre games line-up, according to Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai.

Hirai told Nikkei that 380 titles would hit the console in the current fiscal year - which ends next March. If you don't count the 110 or so games already available, that equates to about 40 games a month - which is a staggeringly impressive sum. Even taking the existing titles into account, it's a very respectable 30 a month.

Hirai said that 200 of the games will be regular boxed titles, while the remaining 180 will be downloadable from the PlayStation Network. With the PS3 currently being outsold by the Nintendo Wii 3-to-1 in Japan and 2-to-1 in the US, Sony is clearly hoping that a flood of new titles will have a positive effect on hardware sales figures. We're just hoping for some truly exciting and original games that will make the most of the PS3's stupendous next-gen capabilities. Fingers crossed...
