PS3 runs Windows

Intrepid PS3 fan convinces Sony's machine to play nice with its own version of Windows.

A dedicated PS3 fan has tricked Sony's uber console into a feat previously unthinkable - running a bonafide version of Microsoft Windows.

Granted, it's Windows 2000, and technically it's running as an emulation under Linux, but it's there all the same.

Settling down with significantly more free time away from games than your average PS3 owner, one gamer known only as Wickedwanda managed to shoehorn Windows 2000 Pro into a PS3, running under virtual machine emulation in Yellow Dog Linux, Sony's official alternative OS for the console.

It's quite a feat, and what's more the gamer says it's perfectly stable. "It's certainly usable for a single application like IE or Firefox" they posted on a PS3 fansite.

The next step, says Wickedwanda, is to install an N64 emulator on the console. Nintendo games running on PS3? Looks like the Wii has more of a challenge from Sony than we thought.
