UK iPhone - Finally!

Steve Jobs comes to the UK to unleash the iPhone - it's on O2, and costs £269!

-

It's been a hell of a long time coming, and now, finally, it is here. 82 days after it was first officially announced, Steve Jobs is releasing the iPhone on the UK in person.

The details you've been waiting for: It's available from the beginning of November, costs 269 quid and is available on O2 (after what a last-minute struggle for the iPhone network carrier, apparently), who will tie you to an 18-month contract It's about time it came to the UK, too: Especially after Apple slashed the US price by 200 bucks (causing their sales to go up 200%), the iPhone's absence from the UK stores has become rather painful for Apple-fans on this side of the pond.

The UK version of the iPhone is essentially the exact same as the US version. It still has the best touch-screen known to man, it's the most beautiful mobile out there, and we want one for every day of the week, but sadly, it's still a dinosaur in tech terms. Steve Jobs claims that introducing 3G would drastically reduce the talk time - to as little as 2.5 hours - and that's why it hasn't been included.

C'mon, Apple, even with a price of 269 quid, it's all about the 3G nowadays, and many potential buyers will think twice before investing their hard-earned in yesteryear's 0.5 mbit/second mobile broadband technology, when HSDPA - with a theoretical speed-cap of 14.4 mbit/s - is being rolled out across the UK networks as we speak!

The upside with O2 as the provider, of course, is vast number of O2 hotspots available - and if you've got an iPhone, you can use them all for free. If you ask us, that doesn't quite make up for the lack of 3G, but at least it's a start.

Of course, we've already had the US version kicking about the T3 offices for a while. First, we had to show it to London, and then we had the first UK review - check 'em out before you dust of the 'ole credit card!
